Day 1—Halifax: Welcome to beautiful Halifax! Relax and enjoy two nights at the Delta Halifax Hotel. Meet your new traveling friends at tonight’s reception. Welcome Reception included.
Day 2—Today we’ll follow the Marine Drive along the Eastern Shore. Our first stop is at the Fisherman’s Life Museum. The tea is always on and the welcome warm at this homestead, typical of an inshore fisherman’s family home. We’ll continue on to Sherbrooke Village, a lumbering and shipbuilding town restored to its original 19th century grandeur. See costumed weavers, potters, blacksmiths, printers and more plying their trades in authentic workshops. From Sherbrooke we’ll travel to the Canso Causeway and then to a cozy inn in Baddeck, our home for the next two nights. Meals included: B, L.
Day 3—Today your journey takes you around Nova Scotia’s famous Cabot Trail. We’ll stop in Cheticamp for a whale-watching cruise. After a picnic lunch, we’ll visit “Tartans & Treasures” to see old-fashioned kilts, Scottish sweaters and more. Tonight you’ll have free time to relax in Baddeck and enjoy dinner on your own. Day 4— After breakfast together, you may choose to join one of the Optional Excursions below, or explore the town on your own.
Option #1—Sailing Cruise: Take a cruise on Bras d’Or Lake. You’ll get a spectacular view of the Baddeck shoreline with its lush trees and flowers, plus views of the Bell Museum, Bell Bay Golf Course and Alexander Graham Bell’s mansion, Beinn Breagh. Price: $45 per person.
Option #2—Alexander Graham Bell Museum: This National Historic Site shows how Alexander Graham Bell and his associates bridged the gap between sounds and silence. Price: $10 per person.
Later in the morning we’ll depart Baddeck and continue on the Canso Causeway. Then we’re off to the Lismore Sheep Farm. The farm’s staff and sheep dogs will take you on a tour of the farm and demonstrate how the dogs herd the flock of 300 sheep. Be sure to visit the farm’s excellent gift shop! We’ll continue on to Pictou Lodge on the shore of the Northumberland Strait. Enjoy the amenities this oceanside resort features such as sea kayaking, paddleboats, nature trails and much more. Day 5—Travel across rolling farmlands and tiny villages, past sensational seascapes and bustling harbors to Stanley Bridge Aquarium, then onto “Green Gables” famed by author L.M. Montgomery. Relax and enjoy a mouth-watering seafood lunch at the famous Fisher-man’s Wharf Restaurant. Following lunch, continue your tour of the island, concluding with a tour of Charlottetown. Optional Excursion—Anne of Green Gables: Tonight we’ll head to the Charlottetown Festival to see “Anne of Green Gables,” a delightful musical. Price: $68 per person.
Day 6—This morning we’ll depart Charlottetown to meet the family members of a local potato farm who will tell us all about life in this marvelous region. From the farm we’ll travel across the dramatic Confederation Bridge to Cape Jourimain Nature Center. At the Interpretation Center you will enjoy the interactive displays on ecology, history and over 170 species of birds. After lunch we’ll continue back to Nova Scotia with a stop at the Masstown Farmers Market before ending the day in Halifax. Meals included: B, L.
Day 7—Today we’ll tour the fascinating city of Halifax. We’ll see the Halifax Public Gardens, stop for photos at the Citadel Hill National Historic Site and visit Fairview Lawn Cemetery, where some of the victims of the Titanic were laid to rest. Later we’ll visit Peggy’s Cove, one of the most photographed locations in Nova Scotia. With its weathered buildings and fleet of fishing boats, the area is an artist’s paradise. The Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse serves as the local post office. Back in Halifax you’ll have time to explore the waterfront. Meals included: B, L.
Day 8—This morning we’ll visit the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. You’ll be amazed at the Maritime’s vast collection of artifacts relating to the marine history of Nova Scotia. After our visit, we’ll bid a fond farewell to this special part of Canada. Meals Included: B.
